His Place Monthly Fishing Report - June 2002

Hello! First, let me say sorry for the slow update on the newsletter.  I really managed to mess things up editing this page on my own - thank goodness for fabulous web developers that can come in and fix my mangled messes!!  ( I know just enough about these web page updates to really be dangerous!)

Anyway, I have some new pictures to post, and as always, more stories to tell!  Welcome to the Newsletter page, and we hope to see you soon!

Mike Hill - The KING of TROUT!  Rev.  Judd Shaw - Fisher of Men, & TROUT!

These guys were both supposedly "learning to fish"...  Michael was beginning fly-fishing, if memory serves, and Judd supposedly "wasn't much of a fisherman".  Uh-huh...  Right... (Well, Rev. Judd might have had a little extra help from upstairs...;o)  )

Mike Gladd & Greg (one of out wonderful guides!) and Linda Gladd & Greg on the upper right.  Mike & Linda were VERY GLADD!!! with their fishing trips during their stay with us...  Linda's nice Rainbow in this picture was the focus of my fish story last month about the "Little Rainbow that Could"  That fish was a fighter!  Linda said she'd put that fish up against a Brown for sheer fighting ability any day of the week.  I just got the pictures from Mike and Linda - Thanks So Much!

Walt Hipsher - When I asked Walt how he caught this fish, he said,

"Well, Julie, it's very simple, actually.  I used a formula called the Scalar Relativistic Local Density Approximation (ScRLDA). (Always remember, Julie, that "Sc" is used to avoid confusion with spin-polarization which is abbreviated S.) This is a simplified version of the RLDA. The equations to solve are:

"

Thank Goodness for the rest of us that you do NOT

have to be a Nuclear Physicist like Walt to catch trout on the White!!!

June 2002 - What the fish are biting on – and NOT…

Well, going into June, it seems like the fish have more or less decided what they want to eat, finally.

For the live bait bunch - River minnows, shad, & shiners - Still NOT – it still seems to be safe for these critters in the river going into June.

What's still getting the fish?  Whole crawdads, 2-1/2” or less, crawdad tails, Nightcrawlers, and all kinds of Worms are still getting the fish.  Our customers have had good luck with the African Red Worms, too.  Has anyone seen any Sculpin yet?  I sure haven't, and no one I've talked to has seen any quantity to speak of either - I guess it's still a little too early for those.

Artificials - Lures, Spoons & Spinners – still working well.  Try some Rooster Tails in Green (no, not olive green - green green) - #210's.  Rapala Countdowns in Gold - sizes 5, 7 & 9.  Colorado's in copper/gold and silver/gold - 1/4 oz., 1/6 oz., and 1/10th oz are all working depending on the flow.

Flies – There has even been a little dry fly activity, if you can believe that.  Try some Pale Morning Duns or Sparkle Duns around size 16.  Yellow to very light olive seems to be the color.

Nymphs - Scuds, in size 12, colors Tan & Olive.  Beadhead Hare's Ears, sizes 14 & 16 are also working well.  When the water goes up (?) the thing to try will be the Hollywood San Juan Worms, in fire orange and bright red!

Fish Story of the Month!

Well, it's time to tell a little about my husband.  He caught a good fish just the other day - see the picture of "Baby" below...  Baby was a FAT 31", 13 lb. 1 oz., and Steve caught him just across from our dock on the evening of May 28th.  Or, I should say, Steve hooked him just across from our dock.  Since he was the only one in the boat at the time, by the time he actually landed him, we was just past the Highway 62 bridge.

He was fishing around dark (it's the only time I let him go - when his chores around here are done!) and Baby bit on his lure...  About 20 minutes later, Baby & Steve were both exhausted, and Baby had to spend some time resting in the Revival Tank.  (I named him Baby because I had to hold him for awhile in front of the intake, and I was talking to him, "Come On, Baby...")  After about an hour and a half,  Baby was plenty green and ready to go, we weighed him in a net and released him unharmed.

Last night, Steve says he caught at least a 17 pounder, but decided to do a "Quick Release" at the boat (read - "I lost it while I was trying to net it...")  So - no picture, no proof, no witnesses - Hmmm... Sounds like just another Fish Story to me...

Water Level & River Conditions

The water level has been pretty much the same for the last several weeks, until the beginning of this month (June).  They had been running 2 generators, and throttling them up & down.  Today as I sit here and write, they are doing the same thing.  The difference is that late at night, they have been running more water.  This last week, (first week of June), it has been off completely off during the day.  I've heard rumors that they are going to run more water up to 8 hours a day, and then maybe 12 hours a day.  We just don't know which 8 hours - hopefully at night???  Of course, this is all assuming that the gauge at Newport remains at around 10' or below.  So, ironically, more rain would mean less water coming out of Bull Shoals into the White.

The river seems to have a lot of new moss & algae growth - probably because of the relatively low and steady flows we've had for well over a month.  I've had several of our guests tell us that when they are wading, the rocks are more slippery (algae) than they've seen it in some time.  Several of my guests have had to avail themselves of our clothes dryers in the laundry room...

Also - think you know the channels of the White River like the back of your hand while boating???  Well, the Corp of Engineers has a few new surprises in store for you!  It's really a good thing, though.  As part of their habitat restoration project, lots (and I do mean lots) of big (yes, I do mean big) rocks have been placed in the main channel between the Highway 62 Bridge and the Cotter Railroad Bridge.  Just like all the rocks in the river, once you know they're there - you tend to remember...

Until next month!!!   Good Fishing!
